Call for Enhanced Online Safety Measures Following Personal Harassment Incident
Sasha-Jay, an individual who recently experienced the distressing impact of online impersonation, is sharing her story to seek answers and raise awareness about the importance of online safety.
Reflecting on her ordeal, she admitted, “I always thought, ‘oh, it’ll never happen to me,’ and now it’s happened to me.” Sasha-Jay expressed concerns about the limitations of existing safeguards on social media platforms, stating, “Social media is powerful, but there are still not enough protections against long-term impersonation and targeted attacks.”
In light of her experience, she advocates for the introduction of stricter identification verification protocols across social media platforms. “A fake profile may seem harmless to some, but it can have dire consequences, damaging reputations, relationships, and mental health,” she cautioned.
Sasha-Jay is urging internet users to exercise greater caution in their online interactions. She recommends keeping social media profiles private, meticulously verifying account authenticity, promptly reporting fake profiles, and safeguarding personal information. “Most importantly, it’s vital to recognize that online actions often spill into real life, leading to potential harm,” she cautioned.
“No one should have to struggle to reclaim their identity or feel unsafe due to the actions of others hiding behind a screen,” she added.
A spokesperson for the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology emphasized the necessity for social media providers to implement measures that protect users from various forms of online abuse. “Impersonating or ‘catfishing’ as someone else online is a reprehensible form of abuse that can have severe consequences for victims both online and offline,” they stated.
Under the Online Safety Act, all applicable services, including social media platforms, are required to safeguard users against illegal content and criminal behavior, particularly in relation to false communications offenses.
