Kirby Air Riders Development Update: Original City Trial Map Not Feasible
In a recent developer update, Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Kirby Air Riders, shared insights on the game’s design process, revealing that the team contemplated reintroducing the City Trial map from the beloved GameCube installment. However, he mentioned that the endeavor proved unfeasible due to the extensive resources and effort required.
Sakurai explained, “During the design planning phase for City Trial, we actually considered bringing back the old map as one of our options. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t pull it off. The conditions of game design today differ greatly from those of the past, making it a task of tremendous cost and effort.”
The complexities of modern game mechanics greatly influenced the development of the new setting, Skyah. With the capability to host up to 16 players—a significant increase from previous titles—balancing machine power-ups and their frequency became crucial. “It took everything we could just to create the base for Skyah; it wasn’t merely a matter of porting it over,” Sakurai stated.
He elaborated on the intricacies involved in the design, noting that the gameplay field required careful consideration of various parameters. “We had to determine how large the gameplay area should be and how frequently attacks should occur to maintain a fair balance between offense and defense,” he explained. “Moreover, the ratio of surface, underground, and building areas had to be meticulously assessed to ensure dynamic gameplay experiences.”
Sakurai reflected on the collaborative nature of the current project, contrasting it with his prior experiences where he single-handedly adjusted machine parameters. “This time, however, many contributed to balance adjustments, making the design process far more intricate. Even a slight increase in average machine speed can necessitate a reevaluation of the field’s dimensions.”
He emphasized the challenge of crafting a coherent design under such limitations, stating, “The composition is so delicate that even minor changes can greatly affect the overall balance and feel of the game. Condensing all elements of Skyah into a single setting was essential to keep gameplay enjoyable while allowing for varied battle strategies.”
In addition to his role in game design, Sakurai revealed that he also penned the lyrics for Kirby Air Riders’ main theme. The game recently received an update, with detailed patch notes available through the official channels.
