Apple to Unveil Affordable iPhone 17e and MacBook Neo

Apple is poised to launch two new budget-friendly devices—a low-cost iPhone 17e and the MacBook Neo—tomorrow. Both models feature A-series chips, a technology historically reserved for the iPhone and iPad lines.

The MacBook Neo is equipped with Apple’s A18 Pro chip, previously seen in the iPhone 16 Pro models. In contrast, the iPhone 17e boasts the newer A19 chip. Early benchmarks indicate that the iPhone 17e significantly outperforms the MacBook Neo despite both devices being retail priced at $599.

In initial testing, the iPhone 17e achieved an impressive multi-core score of 9,241 on Geekbench, surpassing the MacBook Neo’s score of 8,668. Single-core results further illustrated the iPhone’s superiority, with a score of 3,607 compared to the MacBook Neo’s 3,461.

Graphics performance is more closely matched, with the MacBook Neo scoring between 30,000 and 31,400 on the Metal benchmark, while the iPhone 17e recorded scores ranging from 31,000 to 31,600.

Both devices come standard with 8GB of RAM, which, although modest by Mac standards, has been deemed adequate for everyday light tasks by early reviewers. Notably, the MacBook Neo represents a shift for Apple as it marks the first time a Mac has utilized an A-series chip, typically designed for iPhones, rather than the conventional M-series chips.

As the MacBook Neo integrates iPhone-level processing power into a laptop format, it remains to be seen how its sales perform, particularly given its comparatively lower CPU performance relative to the iPhone 17e.
