Augie Meyers, Grammy-Winning Music Icon, Passes Away at 85
Grammy-winning musician Augie Meyers, renowned for his pioneering contributions to Tex-Mex music, passed away in his sleep on March 7, at the age of 85. The news was confirmed via a heartfelt post on his official Facebook page, where it was noted that his wife, Sara, was by his side during his final moments. The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from friends and fans, stating, “A Memorial Service for the public will be announced soon.”
Meyers was celebrated for his unique blending of Tex-Mex and rock music, notably as the keyboardist for the groundbreaking 1960s group, the Sir Douglas Quintet. He later founded the Grammy-winning supergroup Texas Tornados in the 1990s, alongside fellow icons Doug Sahm, Flaco Jiménez, and Freddy Fender. Meyers was the last living member of this influential quartet. His solo track, “(Hey Baby) Que Paso,” has become widely regarded as the unofficial anthem of San Antonio.
In addition to his performance career, Meyers made a significant impact as a music entrepreneur, running several record labels including Texas Re-Cord Company—co-founded with Lucky Tomblin—Superbeet Records, White Boy Records, and El Sendero. He also lent his keyboard skills to a host of legendary artists, including Bob Dylan, Tom Jones, and Tom Waits.
In the wake of his passing, tributes have poured in from fans and fellow musicians alike. One admirer remarked on Instagram, “Great musician and creator of that sound that made Tex-Mex music awesome.” Another fan poignantly noted, “Absolute legend…Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender, and Flaco Jiménez were there to welcome him on the other side…gracias amigos!”
Messages of condolence filled social media platforms, with one individual stating, “You will be deeply missed, but your music and legacy will continue to inspire us all. Rest in peace, Augie.” Another fan reflected on a recent performance, sharing, “I was just thinking of him the other day and appreciating the gifts he gave all of us.”
As the music community mourns the loss of this Texas icon, many remember Meyers not only for his remarkable contributions to music but for the kindness and warmth he embodied throughout his life.
