ITV Responds to Backlash Over Eurovision 2026 Selection
The Azerbaijani broadcaster ITV has issued a statement defending its choice of artist and song for the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, following a wave of criticism surrounding the announcement.
Just two days after unveiling “Just Go,” performed by JIVA, as its entry for the 70th edition of the competition, ITV took to social media to clarify the selection process. In an Instagram post, the broadcaster explained that JIVA was one of three finalists shortlisted through a rigorous evaluation process that involved insights from a specially convened focus group and expert opinions.
ITV noted that a pivotal factor influencing their selection was the reintroduction of jury voting in the Eurovision semi-finals. This led to a stronger emphasis on live vocal performances and overall stage presence when assessing potential entries.
Additionally, the broadcaster addressed assertions circulating on social media regarding the song’s creation, specifically allegations that it was crafted using artificial intelligence. ITV firmly rebutted this claim, stating:
“These ideas do not reflect the truth. Just Go is an original musical composition developed through a professional creative process, shaped by years of expertise and artistic labor.”
The statement concluded with a message of unwavering support for JIVA, who is scheduled to perform in the first half of the second semi-final on May 14.
Azerbaijan’s Eurovision Legacy
Azerbaijan made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008, with the duo Elnur & Samir finishing eighth with their entry “Day After Day.” A landmark moment came in 2011 when Ell & Nikki secured the country’s first victory with “Running Scared,” amassing 221 points, including three sets of 12 points from Malta, Russia, and Turkey. However, the nation faced a setback in 2018 when it failed to reach the final for the first time, breaking a previous streak of 100% qualifications.
