Clemson Edges Out Carolina in ACC Tournament Quarterfinals
By Adam Lucas
In a closely contested matchup, the University of North Carolina (UNC) fell to Clemson University, 80-79, in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament held in Charlotte. The defeat marked a disappointment for the Tar Heels, who struggled to find their rhythm on both offense and defense throughout the game.
Clemson exhibited a more aggressive style, especially evident in the final moments when Carolina attempted a comeback from a 15-point deficit with just over three minutes left. Despite cutting the score to a single point with only 2.7 seconds remaining, Carolina’s earlier struggles hampered their chances for victory.
The decisive final seconds saw Clemson missing the first of two free throws. After a strategic timeout, the Tigers appeared to intentionally miss the second free throw, but Carolina couldn’t capitalize, as Jarin Stevenson’s 75-foot attempt at the buzzer fell short.
Clemson shot an impressive 49.1% from the field and 47.4% from beyond the arc, displaying a well-distributed offensive effort with six players scoring in double figures. Throughout the match, the Tigers’ offense diversified significantly compared to their performance in last week’s game against Carolina, where RJ Godfrey was the primary focus.
UNC’s Henri Veesaar was the standout performer, securing his 14th double-double of the season with a career-high 28 points and 17 rebounds. Fellow guards Seth Trimble and Derek Dixon contributed 13 and 16 points, respectively, although the team’s overall performance was hampered by a significant stretch where they faltered offensively, shooting only 3-for-14 from the field and failing to involve Veesaar in their scoring.
The bench production was another key storyline, with Clemson outscoring UNC’s reserves 29-5. Key contributions from Nick Davidson, who scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, bolstered Clemson’s success. In contrast, UNC’s bench struggled, contributing minimal stats and yielding a collective plus/minus rating below zero.
Free throw performance also played a role in the outcome, as Carolina managed just 10-for-17 from the charity stripe, including missed opportunities for potential three-point plays in the second half.
Despite a late push, Carolina couldn’t overcome a series of strategic possessions by Clemson that consumed valuable clock time during the second half, showcasing the Tigers’ effective execution.
The loss halts UNC’s streak of 11 consecutive ACC Tournaments with at least one victory and marks a setback in their history against Clemson, leading to a 34-5 record against them at neutral sites and a 15-2 record in the ACC Tournament. This defeat extends a troubling trend, with UNC now having lost their opening game in the tournament as a fourth seed for four consecutive occasions.
Former UNC greats such as Brendan Haywood, Marvin Williams, and Tyler Zeller were present to support their alma mater, although the passionate Tar Heel crowd was subdued until the final moments of the game.
Looking ahead, Carolina will await the NCAA Tournament pairings slated for Sunday, seeking redemption as they prepare to embark on their postseason journey.
