Kathryn Hahn Cast as Mother Gothel in Disney’s Live-Action “Tangled”
Actress Kathryn Hahn, known for her roles in Tiny Beautiful Things and The Studio, has officially been cast as the villain Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled. The character of Mother Gothel is notorious for keeping Rapunzel, portrayed by Teagan Croft, secluded to exploit the magical healing powers of her long, golden hair.
Initial reports from Deadline confirmed Hahn’s casting earlier this year, following discussions that began back in January. The project had been revived after Scarlett Johansson was initially considered for the role but subsequently withdrew due to scheduling conflicts with other major productions, including Batman II and a reboot of The Exorcist.
In an engaging Instagram post, Hahn revealed her newfound understanding of the term “OOTD” (Outfit of the Day), showcasing a T-shirt adorned with cutouts of the animated Mother Gothel, originally voiced by Donna Murphy. Notably, since joining Instagram, Hahn has adopted the username @motherhahn.
Milo Manheim, recognized for his work in the Zombies franchise, will take on the role of Flynn Rider, a charming rogue known for his trademark smolder.
Michael Gracey, the director behind The Greatest Showman, will helm the film. The screenplay is being developed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who has credits including Do Revenge, Someone Great, and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Kristin Burr will produce for Burr! Productions, while Lucy Kitada serves as executive producer. The original animated Tangled, released in 2010, was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, featuring Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider. The film’s memorable music was composed by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Glenn Slater.
Tangled, inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, has enjoyed commercial success, earning over $590 million worldwide and receiving an Oscar nomination for the original song “I See The Light.” In addition to Tangled, Disney is also gearing up for a live-action adaptation of Moana, starring Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga’aia, set to hit theaters in July.
