Meta Secures 10-Year Lease for New Flagship Store in New York City
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has announced a significant long-term investment in the retail sector, committing to a 10-year lease for its inaugural flagship store, named Meta Lab, located in New York City. The establishment will occupy a five-level, 15,000-square-foot townhouse situated at 697 Fifth Avenue, which is owned by Vornado Realty Trust.
The new store is set to feature a range of Meta’s wearable technologies, including its innovative artificial intelligence glasses and virtual reality headsets. This flagship follows a successful pop-up store already operating at the same location.
Meta’s Vice President and Creative Director, Matt Jacobson, expressed enthusiasm about the company’s decision to establish a permanent presence on Fifth Avenue, stating, “We’re proud to make a long-term commitment to Fifth Avenue, the heart of U.S. retail. Placing our flagship store alongside brands that help define culture will distinguish Meta Lab from traditional consumer electronics retail.”
The store is strategically located near the St. Regis Hotel, positioned between East 54th and 55th streets, placing it in one of the world’s most expensive retail corridors. According to Cushman & Wakefield, the average asking rent on Fifth Avenue between 49th and 60th streets reached $2,305 per square foot in the fourth quarter, reflecting a nearly 4% increase year-over-year. The area’s availability rate stands at 13%, which marks a 4.4% change from the previous year, slightly exceeding the city’s overall office space availability of 12%.
The luxury retail sector has fared particularly well amidst a K-shaped economic recovery, with affluent households increasing their spending while lower-income groups have faced challenges due to inflation and rising living costs.
Meta Lab debuted as part of the company’s experiential retail initiative launched in 2024, aimed at promoting its smart glasses, developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban. These glasses enable users to capture images, record videos, make phone calls, and send messages, enhancing the consumer experience by allowing potential customers to “see, try, and understand” the products.
The flagship store marks Meta’s second permanent retail presence, following a 20,000-square-foot location at 8600 Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood. The company also operates stores in Burlingame, California, and has opened temporary boutiques in Las Vegas and Honolulu. Future expansion plans for additional retail locations are anticipated throughout 2026.
Glen Weiss, Executive Vice President and Co-Head of Real Estate at Vornado, conveyed his excitement regarding the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to further extend our long-standing relationship with Meta and applaud their permanent entry into New York City’s retail landscape.”
Meta currently leases the entire 730,000 square feet of office space at the Farley Building, a historic structure repurposed by Vornado that serves as Meta’s New York headquarters and a center for its technology and engineering teams. Vornado has indicated it may consider selling the office building to finance upcoming developments in the future.
