Gabriel Domingues: A Trailblazer in Casting with Oscar Nomination for The Secret Agent
Gabriel Domingues, the casting director of The Secret Agent, has become a familiar name since his nomination for the best achievement in casting at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ inaugural awards in this category. Reflecting on the experience, Domingues recounts a common sentiment he encounters: “Before every interview, I’m met with comments like, ‘Congratulations! But what does casting mean?’” With a chuckle, he adds, “I never anticipated this nomination. It’s incredibly gratifying and an honor to be recognized in this way, especially as the role of casting directors continues to evolve in the industry.”
Domingues’ nomination places him alongside notable figures such as Nina Gold (Hamnet), Jennifer Venditti (Marty Supreme), Cassandra Kulukundis (One Battle After Another), and Francine Maisler (Sinners). This recognition not only marks a milestone for Brazilian cinema but also makes The Secret Agent, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, the first international film to achieve acknowledgment in this category. The film follows a successful run for Brazilian cinema after last year’s Oscar win for I’m Still Here.
Expressing hope for Brazil’s cinematic future, Domingues remarks, “I observe the international landscape and see South Korea consistently producing competitive films. I envision Brazil in a similar position—a nation recognized annually for its impactful cinema showcasing Brazilian narratives and cultural intricacies.”
Set against the backdrop of Brazil’s oppressive dictatorship in 1977, The Secret Agent portrays Marcelo, played by acclaimed actor Wagner Moura, who seeks refuge in Recife and reconnects with his son, Fernando. The film’s narrative structure intertwines past and present, as university researchers analyze archival conversations of Marcelo, shedding light on a tumultuous period in Brazilian history.
Filho’s vision steers clear of conventional representations of dictatorship, as Domingues explains, “Kleber held specific ideas regarding the visuals and socio-economic context of that time. It’s imperative to reflect the realities of poverty and inequality exacerbated during the dictatorship.”
Domingues draws on his prior experience as a casting assistant for Filho’s 2016 film Aquarius, reinforcing the collaborative environment they fostered. He notes, “Casting interlinks deeply with the narrative. It’s crucial to approach casting as a means to enrich storytelling.”
Reengaging with Filho for The Secret Agent allowed Domingues to apply his enhanced skills, built over several years of professional growth since Aquarius. “We have both evolved—personally and professionally—and the sociopolitical context of Brazil has shifted considerably,” he observes.
Having begun casting preparations six months before production, Domingues faced the challenge of selecting from 65 distinct characters. About one-third of the cast was specifically chosen by Filho, while the remainder comprised emerging talent sourced through auditions.
His casting ethos involves identifying compelling individuals who can authentically encapsulate their roles. “I’m always on the lookout for individuals who possess charisma and expressiveness, even if these traits are abstract notions,” he describes.
The casting process adapted to the digital age, with actors submitting self-taped auditions. Depending on participants’ locations, auditions were conducted live in São Paulo or via Zoom. Domingues implemented this flexible approach to evaluate actors effectively, facilitating a direct engagement with the material.
Emphasizing the film’s introspective nature, Domingues states, “We consciously meld established actors with new faces to create an authentic representation of 1970s Brazil.” For instance, Maria, who captured Filho’s attention in Bacurau, had a role tailored specifically for her, showcasing the collaborative spirit of their partnership.
Reflecting on industry transformations, Domingues notes a shift in casting since the pandemic. “A decade ago, I would physically attend auditions; today, simplicity and technology have streamlined the process, reaching a more diverse pool of talent,” he explains.
As The Secret Agent continues to draw attention, Domingues hopes the new Oscar category helps demystify the casting process. He asserts, “Casting transcends merely discovering the next star. It’s about constructing a character and understanding cultural narratives,” encapsulating the intuition-driven nature of the profession.
The Secret Agent is currently being screened in select theaters, inviting audiences to delve into a crucial chapter of Brazil’s past.
