BBC Announces Two New Series of Peaky Blinders, Ushering in a New Era
The BBC has officially confirmed the return of the critically acclaimed series Peaky Blinders with two new seasons featuring a “new generation of Shelbys.” The historical drama, which chronicles the exploits of a Birmingham-based crime family, first premiered in 2013 and has captivated audiences across its six-season run.
In an exciting announcement, series creator Steven Knight is developing the two new installments set in 1950s Birmingham. Cillian Murphy, who played the lead role, will serve as an executive producer for the upcoming series. The new episodes will be available for streaming on BBC iPlayer and broadcast on BBC One, with plans for a Netflix release in territories outside the UK.
The BBC teased fans with details of the new seasons, stating: “Britain, 1953. After significant destruction during World War II, Birmingham is poised to rebuild, transforming its landscape with concrete and steel.”
The network emphasized that the forthcoming chapters will depict a fierce competition revolving around Birmingham’s reconstruction efforts, presenting a city rife with both opportunity and danger, with the Shelby family at the core of the unfolding drama.
Further details are expected to be revealed soon, but Knight expressed enthusiasm about the continuation of the Peaky Blinders saga. “I’m thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story,” he stated. “Once again, it will be rooted in Birmingham and will narrate the tale of a city emerging from the devastation of the Birmingham Blitz. The new generation of Shelbys has taken the wheel, and it promises to be an exhilarating ride.”
The new series will be produced by Kudos, known for their work on SAS Rogue Heroes and Grantchester, in collaboration with Garrison Drama. Filming is set to take place at Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham.
Additionally, this project is supported by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), marking the first collaboration following the recent BBC partnership with WMCA and Create Central aimed at expanding production investments in the West Midlands.
Peaky Blinders has also recently extended its reach to the big screen, with the release of The Immortal Man, which premiered in cinemas last week and is set to debut on Netflix later this month. This film marks the initial cinematic adaptation of the beloved series and features a significant recasting.
For fans interested, all six seasons of Peaky Blinders are currently available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.
Stay tuned for more updates on this iconic series as they become available.
