Since its launch in 2016, Pokémon Go has amassed an impressive collection of over 30 billion real-world images. This extensive visual archive was created as players explored urban environments using their smartphones, inadvertently contributing to a monumental dataset.
The data collected has now been transformed into a Visual Positioning System (VPS) by Niantic Spatial. Unlike traditional GPS, which often falters in densely populated areas, the VPS relies on visual cues from the surrounding environment to ascertain location and orientation. This innovation is crucial for the effective navigation of delivery robots in bustling city landscapes.
Game features such as Field Research and voluntary location scanning encouraged users to photograph public art, landmarks, and various outdoor spaces, thereby enhancing the database’s accuracy and usability. Niantic has emphasized that these scanning features were always optional, with players informed about how their contributions could be employed.
Currently, this cutting-edge mapping technology is being integrated by Coco Robotics, a company that operates small wheeled delivery robots in major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Helsinki. By combining GPS technology with Niantic’s VPS, Coco’s robots adeptly navigate sidewalks, street crossings, and crowded thoroughfares, significantly improving their operational efficiency. With approximately 1,000 robots in service, Coco Robotics has successfully completed hundreds of thousands of deliveries.
John Hanke, CEO of Niantic Spatial, remarked on the complexity of programming a digital character to navigate a real-world setting, noting that the challenges faced in gaming are akin to those encountered in robotics.
