Unreleased Film and Album Highlight George Michael’s Iconic 1988 Faith Tour
A long-lost film documenting George Michael’s groundbreaking 1988 Faith tour is scheduled for release in theaters later this year, accompanied by a new album featuring previously unheard live performances.
Titled George Michael: The Faith Tour, the film will showcase newly unearthed footage from a unique 14-camera shoot of Michael’s performance at Paris’ Bercy Arena in 1988. A press release outlines this endeavor as a significant achievement in archival filmmaking, celebrating the height of Michael’s ambition and creativity.
The film is directed by Michael’s long-time collaborators, Andy Morahan and David Austin, and is a collaborative project between George Michael Entertainment and Mercury Studios. Specific release dates and distribution information have yet to be disclosed.
In addition to the main feature, audiences can expect a short film by photographer Mary McCartney, which incorporates voiceover from an unheard interview with Michael and behind-the-scenes segments from his iconic Faith music video, shot by renowned American photographer Herb Ritts.
Alongside the film, an 18-track live album titled The Faith Tour is slated to launch, featuring unreleased material from both Wham! and Michael’s solo career.
George Michael’s Faith album is widely recognized as one of the quintessential pop records of the 1980s, amassing over 25 million sales globally and producing four US number one hits: “Faith,” “Father Figure,” “One More Try,” and “Monkey.” In a review for The Guardian, Alan McGee hailed the album as Michael’s masterpiece, noting its transition into musical territory akin to Brian Wilson’s Pet Sounds. He emphasized that Michael co-produced the album, wrote all tracks, played most instruments, and provided backing vocals and harmonies.
Morahan and Austin previously collaborated on the 2017 documentary George Michael: Freedom, which explored the singer’s initial pursuit of fame and his subsequent disenchantment with the music industry. Notably, Michael was completing this documentary shortly before his passing in 2016.
Since his death, George Michael’s presence has remained strong in the public sphere and music charts. In 2017, the Michael estate partnered with celebrated producer Nile Rodgers to release a remixed version of his 1990 B-side, “Fantasy.” The 2019 romantic comedy Last Christmas prominently featured Michael’s music, including a previously unheard solo track, “This Is How (We Want You to Get High).”
Wham!’s festive classic “Last Christmas” has solidified its status as a holiday favorite, capturing the UK Christmas number one spot in both 2023 and 2024, only to be dethroned in 2025 by Kylie Minogue’s latest seasonal release. Additionally, “Father Figure” enjoyed a resurgence on TikTok last year after featuring in the Nicole Kidman film Babygirl.
In celebration of Michael’s legacy, art book publisher Rizzoli will soon release Celebrating George: Three Decades of George Michael through the Lens, a coffee table book showcasing many previously unseen images of the artist throughout his illustrious career.
