Netflix Acquires AI Firm InterPositive in a Strategic Move for Filmmaking Efficiency

Last week, Netflix announced its acquisition of InterPositive, an artificial intelligence company co-founded by Hollywood actor Ben Affleck. The deal, valued at up to $600 million according to Bloomberg, could rank among the largest in Netflix’s history, closely trailing its previous $700 million acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company.

While Netflix has yet to officially confirm the financial specifics, sources indicate that the upfront cash payment may be lower than the reported valuation. Under the agreement, InterPositive’s owners could receive additional payments contingent on performance milestones.

InterPositive specializes in tools designed to assist filmmakers during the post-production phase, addressing issues such as continuity and scene enhancement without creating new content or using footage without appropriate permissions. This acquisition is part of Netflix’s broader strategy to incorporate artificial intelligence into its content creation processes. The streaming platform has previously employed generative AI for various projects, including a notable building-collapse scene in its Argentine series, The Eternaut.

Competitors in the industry are also advancing in AI integration. Amazon has initiated efforts to establish in-house AI teams dedicated to film and television projects, while Disney has partnered with OpenAI to explore similar technologies.

Despite the potential benefits of AI in filmmaking, concerns have emerged within the industry regarding job security for workers and the ethical use of training data by AI companies. As the landscape evolves, these issues will likely continue to be a focal point of discussion among industry professionals.
