Update March 17, 3:10 a.m. EDT (0710 UTC): SpaceX confirms successful satellite deployment.

SpaceX has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first company to deploy over 10,000 Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit simultaneously. This landmark event occurred less than seven years following the deployment of its inaugural satellite batch in May 2019.

The launch, which took place on a notable anniversary—the 100th year since Robert Goddard’s historic launch of the first liquid-fueled rocket—was executed using a Falcon 9 rocket. This mission, known as Starlink Group 17-24, marked the 615th flight of the Falcon 9, which operates on kerosene as fuel.

The Falcon 9 lifted off from Space Launch Complex 4 East at 10:19:09 p.m. PDT (1:19:09 a.m. EDT / 0619:09 UTC on March 17). Following a southerly trajectory, this mission represented Vandenberg Space Force Base’s 17th orbital launch of the year.

Deploying using the first stage booster designated B1088—now on its 14th flight—the mission included previous launches supporting NASA and other government agencies. Approximately eight minutes post-launch, B1088 successfully returned, landing on the drone ship “Of Course I Still Love You” in the Pacific Ocean, marking its 184th landing and contributing to SpaceX’s total of 586 booster recoveries.

    10,000 and Counting

The cumulative number of deployed Starlink satellites sets SpaceX apart in the satellite industry. In 2026 alone, the company has maintained a launch frequency of approximately every 2.3 days, with 26 of its 33 Falcon 9 missions this year dedicated to placing Starlink satellites into orbit.

As of February 13, 2026, SpaceX reported that its Starlink service boasts over 10 million active subscribers across 160 countries and regions. Notably, within a month of reaching this milestone, the company expanded its connectivity offerings to Niue, Kuwait, and the Central African Republic.

In October 2025, following the deployment of over 10,000 Starlink satellites, Dr. Jonathan McDowell, a respected orbital tracker, praised this achievement as “truly remarkable.” He indicated that the extent of necessary avoidance maneuvers performed by the satellites far surpasses those conducted in previous years, highlighting the notable technical advancements achieved by SpaceX.

This year, SpaceX introduced its Space Situational Awareness (SSA) system, dubbed “Stargaze,” which utilizes multiple star trackers on board each satellite to create a detailed map of objects in low Earth orbit, enhancing the ability to prevent potential collisions.

In an interview with Spaceflight Now, Caleb Henry from Quilty Space outlined five critical factors behind SpaceX’s ascendancy in the satellite market, attributing four to technological innovations and one to financial capabilities. He underscored that SpaceX’s ability to secure substantial funding significantly differentiates it from other satellite ventures.

Henry pointed out that the technological advantages stem from SpaceX’s ability to integrate its launch systems, satellites, ground stations, and consumer terminals. He notes that the price point achieved for consumer equipment is unmatched, positioning Starlink as a competitive force in the market.

Looking ahead, SpaceX is preparing to launch larger Starlink Version 3 satellites using its next-gen Starship rocket. While the exact launch date remains undisclosed as testing continues, analysts project multiple Starship missions in 2026 to deploy these advanced satellites, which promise enhanced capabilities, including terabit capacity.
