A groundbreaking initiative at the foot of Croagh Patrick has garnered praise from local Oireachtas member, Senator Mark Duffy.
Senator Duffy elaborated on the project, describing it as an immersive virtual reality experience designed to facilitate access to the mountain’s renowned hiking trails.
“This initiative serves as an exemplary model of a tourist attraction that might otherwise remain inaccessible to individuals facing mobility challenges,” Duffy stated. He attributed the project’s innovation to the Mayo North-East Leadership Programme, which has substantially invested in developing advanced 3D technology to simulate a guided ascent up the iconic pilgrimage site.
Participants in the experience are accompanied by a virtual figure of St. Patrick, who narrates the story of the revered figure as they journey up the mountain.
“It is both an engaging and informative presentation,” he noted. “Additionally, the program stands out as a model of inclusivity in tourism.”
Highlighting the significance of making the experience available to those unable to physically climb the mountain, Duffy explained, “For many, having access to a representation of such a popular tourist attraction at the visitor center can be tremendously uplifting.” He emphasized the affordability of implementing similar initiatives across various tourist sites in the region.
“This innovation can create meaningful experiences for individuals, particularly those who are among the most vulnerable in our community,” he remarked.
Senator Duffy further expressed confidence that the initiative would officially launch in May, describing it as a positive investment for the region that could inspire similar programs in tourist attractions throughout Ireland.
Located at the Croagh Patrick Visitor Centre in Murrisk, this new initiative aims to broaden the accessibility and appeal of the site to all visitors.
