Cannondale Introduces the CAAD14: A Return to Performance Roots
Cannondale has unveiled its latest offering in the world of road cycling, the CAAD14 aluminium bike, emphasizing a shift back to its foundational racing heritage.
While the previous model, CAAD13, aimed to find a balance between a competitive race bike and an endurance-oriented option, the CAAD14 is described by Cannondale as being “pared down” for a purer racing experience. This new model does away with mudguard mounts in favor of the design features typical of modern racing bikes, including 32mm tyre clearance, fully integrated cable routing, and a Universal Derailleur Hanger.
Notably, the CAAD14 boasts a more aggressive geometry, even surpassing that of the SuperSix EVO, which underscores its focus on a racing posture and responsive handling. The bike is available in three configurations, with prices ranging from £2,995 / $2,499 / €2,499 to £7,500 / $7,499 / €7,499, in addition to an available frameset.
A Nod to Racing Tradition
The CAAD14 marks a significant pivot within Cannondale’s well-received aluminium platform. While its predecessor sought to echo the design ethos of the SuperSix Evo, the CAAD14 pays homage to the CAAD lineage of yesteryear, acting as a “celebration of aluminium” according to Cannondale.
Andreas Krajewski, Cannondale’s road category marketing manager, articulated the intent behind the design: “The CAAD13 strayed from what defines CAAD. It resembled the SuperSix Evo and, while it sold well, it didn’t highlight the unique characteristics of aluminium—the emotional connection was missing.”
This new iteration represents a bold departure from CAAD13’s direction, positioning itself as a true racing machine.
Enhanced Structural Integrity
One of the most visually striking alterations in the CAAD14 is the redesign of its frame tubing. The advanced truncated aerofoil shapes have been replaced with traditional, rounded profiles, which Cannondale claims maximize aluminium’s intrinsic qualities for enhanced stiffness, explosiveness, and precise handling.
Industrial designer Tanner Van De Veer indicated that his team initially explored more complex shapes but concluded that simpler designs would better leverage aluminium’s properties, focusing instead on amplifying the material’s potential.
To solidify the bike’s aggressive stance, Cannondale has raised the intersection of the seat tube and seatstays, utilizing an oversized head tube and larger junctions between the down tube and top tube. Despite Cannondale’s claim of diverging from the SuperSix Evo, the geometry of the CAAD14 is remarkably similar, with a slight increase in aggressiveness. For instance, the size-56cm frame features a head tube angle of 73 degrees and a marginally shorter reach (392mm).
Modern Features and Strategic Simplicity
Reflecting its race-centric design, the CAAD14 does not include mudguard mounts, which could deter some who were considering it for year-round training. Nevertheless, the bike meets contemporary trends with upgraded features, such as increased tyre clearance for 32mm tires, a Universal Derailleur Hanger, and a transition from the press-fit BB30A standard to a conventional 68mm BSA threaded bottom bracket.
The full-carbon fork retains Cannondale’s Delta steerer design, facilitating complete internal routing through headset bearings, and has been restructured to complement the oversized head tube while incorporating a blind thru-axle dropout.
The top-tier CAAD14 1 model includes the one-piece Momo-designed SystemBar R-One, while the other two models feature two-piece cockpits, adhering to the bike’s classical design aesthetics with a standard round 27.2mm diameter seatpost secured with an external collar.
