Arnold Schwarzenegger to Revive Iconic Role in ‘King Conan’
Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to reprise his legendary role in the latest installment of the “Conan the Barbarian” series, titled “King Conan.” This highly anticipated project marks the first new film in the franchise since its initial success in the 1980s.
The original “Conan the Barbarian,” released in 1982 and based on the literary works of Robert E. Howard, featured Schwarzenegger as the titular character, a warrior on a quest for vengeance against the nefarious Thulsa Doom, portrayed by James Earl Jones. This role was pivotal in launching Schwarzenegger’s illustrious career in Hollywood.
Speaking at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, over the weekend, the 78-year-old actor announced that renowned filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, celebrated for his work on the “Mission: Impossible” series, will helm the new project.
“It’s a compelling story,” Schwarzenegger shared, revealing that his character, after ruling for four decades, faces challenges that lead him to be ousted from his kingdom. “There’s conflict and then he returns, with a healthy dose of madness, violence, magic, and mythical creatures.”
The actor emphasized the advancements in filmmaking technology, stating, “With today’s special effects and production budgets, we’re able to create truly grand cinematic experiences.”
The original “Conan the Barbarian” grossed $68 million and led to a sequel, “Conan the Destroyer,” released two years later. Although plans for a third film emerged in the late 1980s, they ultimately fell through. A 2011 reboot featuring Jason Momoa received a lukewarm response from both critics and audiences.
In addition to “King Conan,” Schwarzenegger has plans to return to other franchise favorites, including “Predator” and “Commando,” where he played a formidable retired Green Beret.
The actor’s recent endeavors include a return to the “Terminator” franchise in the critically panned “Terminator: Dark Fate.” Looking ahead, he is also set to appear in the martial arts drama “Kung Fury 2,” alongside Michael Fassbender, and in “The Man With the Bag,” portraying a beleaguered Santa Claus.
As Schwarzenegger continues to explore roles that shaped his career, fans eagerly await his return to the beloved world of Conan.
