Jessica Henwick Reflects on Career and Role in “How to Make a Killing”

Jessica Henwick, a seasoned actress who has cultivated a diverse portfolio since her teenage years, has garnered acclaim for her roles in well-known franchises such as Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and The Matrix, as well as in respected indie productions like the thriller The Royal Hotel.

In her latest film, How to Make a Killing, Henwick portrays Ruth, the love interest of Becket, a character played by Powell, who embarks on a sinister journey to eliminate wealthy relatives in pursuit of a vast inheritance. Ruth, a fashion designer who steps away from the high-pressure fashion industry to embrace a teaching career, serves as a counterpoint to Becket’s relentless ambition for wealth.

Henwick notes that one particular line from Ruth—”no one teaches us to dream small”—struck a deep chord within her, prompting introspection about her own life’s journey. “I realized how much I relate to that sentiment, having navigated the hustle culture for 15 years since I began my professional career,” she explained.

The actress elaborated on the constant pursuit of success: “There is an inherent drive to always strive for more—bigger, better. It’s easy to lose sight of the reasons why you started in the first place,” she remarked.

Henwick views her character, Ruth, as emblematic of the “slow living” movement that has gained traction on social media, urging individuals to prioritize mental health and avoid burnout. This notion resonates deeply with her personal experiences.

Reflecting on her own journey, Henwick shared, “I hustled for years and then reached a breaking point. It became overwhelming, and I began to question what truly matters. When faced with mortality, the trivial pursuits fade in significance.”

Through her role in How to Make a Killing, Henwick invites audiences to consider the balance between ambition and well-being, a theme that aligns with the growing discourse on sustainable living and mental health in today’s fast-paced society.
