Billie Eilish Set to Make Big Screen Debut in ‘The Bell Jar’ Adaptation
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Billie Eilish is poised to embark on her first major acting role, starring in an adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s seminal semi-autobiographical novel, The Bell Jar.
Sources at Deadline reveal that the 24-year-old artist is in advanced negotiations to portray the lead character in a film directed by Sarah Polley, the acclaimed writer and director who earned an Academy Award for her screenplay of Women Talking.
Eilish, who recently appeared in the 2023 series Swarm, co-created by Donald Glover, has expressed a longstanding passion for acting, despite previous claims to the contrary. “I used to say that I hated acting,” she recounted during her monologue on Saturday Night Live. “But the truth is, when I was little, I loved it! My mom and dad were both actors. So is my brother, Finneas. And it was my dream to be in a movie.”
The film, set to be released by Focus Features in the U.S., represents a significant new direction for Eilish, as she continues to expand her creative repertoire.
Originally published shortly before Plath’s tragic passing at the age of 30, The Bell Jar explores the tumultuous journey of a young female writer grappling with mental health challenges in the 1950s. The novel has been described by Robert McCrum of the Guardian as “a raw, unsettling book with flashes of brilliance, a roman à clef that’s also a long, tormented footnote to Plath’s tormented poetry.”
While The Bell Jar was adapted into a film in 1979 featuring Marilyn Hassett, it received largely unfavorable reviews. Subsequent adaptation attempts involving notable actresses such as Julia Stiles and Dakota Fanning have not materialized.
Polley, who recently captured the best adapted screenplay Oscar for Women Talking, had been connected to a live-action remake of Bambi before departing that project. She is currently working on the screenplay for the family drama & Sons.
Known for her unique filmmaking style, Polley’s past directing credits include relationship dramas Take This Waltz and Away From Here.
Billie Eilish continues to break records in the music industry, recently becoming the first artist to win the Grammy for Song of the Year three times. She has also received the Academy Award for Best Original Song on two occasions for tracks in No Time to Die and Barbie.
In addition, audiences can anticipate the theatrical release of Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft, a 3D concert documentary directed by James Cameron, now set for a May release after a recent delay. Cameron noted on social media that the production is undergoing final enhancements, promising fans a groundbreaking experience.
