Owlchemy Labs Enhances Accessibility in VR Gaming with New Pinch-Based Turning Feature in Dimensional Double Shift

Owlchemy Labs, renowned for its commitment to accessibility in virtual reality (VR) gaming, has introduced a pinch-based turning system for hand tracking in its latest update for Dimensional Double Shift. This update, version 1.9, allows players to turn in the game without needing to physically rotate their bodies.

Previously, players could only navigate by turning their physical bodies, which limited options for those who may not be able to perform such movements comfortably. The new pinch-to-turn feature streamlines gameplay by enabling users to turn using a simple pinch gesture. When accessing the hand menu, players will now notice directional arrows, allowing them to rotate left or right effortlessly. This addition not only enhances the user experience but also provides a more accommodating solution for seated players and those with mobility challenges.

In addition to this turning mechanism, the update allows players to customize various HUD controls, including spacing, height, depth, and distance, further personalizing their gaming experience.

Owlchemy Labs first teased Dimensional Double Shift during a presentation at Gamescom in August, generating excitement despite limited initial details. The developers highlighted their focus on addressing the challenging aspects of hand tracking in VR, enhancing player immersion and interaction.

The studio’s dedication to accessibility is evident in their broader catalog, as they have incorporated hand tracking and various accessibility features into previous titles. This commitment is pivotal for driving mass consumer adoption of cross-reality (XR) gaming.

Having tested the pinch-to-turn feature ahead of its official release, I found the functionality to be intuitive and responsive, significantly enhancing gameplay.

Dimensional Double Shift is currently available as a free-to-play title on Meta Quest, with two downloadable content expansions—Joysey and Hexas—available for $4.99 each.

Owlchemy Labs continues to lead the charge in making VR gaming more inclusive, paving the way for a broader audience to engage with this immersive medium.
