The Alzheimer’s Society has highlighted the therapeutic benefits of doll therapy for individuals living with dementia, noting its potential to provide comfort, instill a sense of purpose, and alleviate anxiety.
Angelo Makri, the society’s senior knowledge officer for wellbeing, emphasized the varying effectiveness of different therapeutic approaches for different individuals. “For some, engaging with dolls can serve as a valuable means of comfort and anxiety reduction,” he stated.
However, Makri stressed the importance of a person-centred approach when introducing dolls into care routines. “Sensitively integrating dolls is crucial, as their impact can differ significantly among individuals. While many may find solace in having a doll, others might experience confusion,” he cautioned.
Therefore, Makri advised caregivers to carefully assess each person’s response to ensure that the therapy is beneficial rather than distressing.
