Netflix Aims to Shorten Wait Time for “One Piece” Season 3 Following Long Delay
In a bid to address viewer concerns about prolonged gaps between seasons, Netflix is taking decisive steps to expedite the release of Season 3 of One Piece, following the prolonged 2.5-year wait that accompanied the transition from Season 1 to Season 2.
The production of Season 3 commenced in November 2025 after the series was officially renewed in August of the same year. This announcement comes shortly after the release of Season 2 on March 10, 2026. In contrast, Season 2 had its production start in June 2024 and concluded filming in February 2025, resulting in a 21-month production timeline.
Should the current production timetable remain consistent, fans could anticipate the release of Season 3 as early as August 2027. However, the timeline may be affected by various factors, including the recent actors’ and writers’ strikes that influenced Season 2’s production schedule. Notably, there are speculations that Netflix might consider filming Seasons 3 and 4 concurrently to further streamline the process, although Season 4 has yet to receive an official green light.
Despite some surprises in viewership rankings—where One Piece debuted at #2, trailing behind Netflix’s Dinosaurs—the series remains one of the streaming platform’s most acclaimed offerings. Season 2 has garnered an impressive 100% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics and a notable 96% from audience ratings, credited for its fidelity to the original material, exceptional casting, and evident care in production.
The financial stakes are high, with reports indicating a budget of approximately $18 million per episode, which underscores the necessity for strong viewership metrics to justify the investment. Any decision to cancel One Piece at this juncture could provoke significant backlash from its dedicated fanbase, especially given that creator Eiichiro Oda has outlined a clear, finite direction for the live-action adaptation, distinct from the manga and anime’s ongoing narrative.
As the reception of Season 2 unfolds over the coming weeks and months, the future of One Piece will continue to be a focal point for Netflix and its viewers alike.
