Former Overwatch Director Jeff Kaplan Opens Up About Blizzard Departure on Lex Fridman’s Podcast
Jeff Kaplan, the revered former director of Blizzard’s popular game Overwatch, has recently shared insights into his abrupt exit from the company in 2021 during an appearance on Lex Fridman’s podcast. Kaplan, who had spent nearly two decades at Blizzard, left many fans concerned about the future of Overwatch when he announced his departure.
In the podcast, Kaplan revealed that the pressures stemming from the Overwatch League and financial expectations triggered significant challenges for the development team. He specifically noted that when Activision Blizzard fell short of investor expectations, responsibility shifted to the game developers, resulting in mounting pressure to expedite the release of Overwatch 2.
Kaplan recounted a pivotal moment in his career when he met with Activision Blizzard’s then-CFO. He described the experience as a defining “breaking point,” stating that he faced immense pressure to generate substantial revenue or face consequences, including potential layoffs.
“It was surreal to be told that if Overwatch didn’t meet projected revenues, I would be held accountable for the loss of jobs,” Kaplan stated. “That was the tipping point for me at Blizzard.”
While expressing his longstanding love for the company and aspirations to retire there, Kaplan concluded that his time with Blizzard was effectively over at that moment. He also expressed relief that the CFO involved is no longer with the company; Dennis Durkin, who served from 2019 until May 2021, has since been succeeded by Armin Zerza.
In recent developments, Overwatch 2 has undergone a branding change, dropping its numerical designation. Blizzard President Johanna Faries described the game as “timeless,” suggesting that the title should reflect its evolving nature. The game remains free-to-play and continues to engage in collaborations with other IPs, including its most recent crossover with NieR: Automata.
Following his departure from Blizzard, Kaplan has embarked on a new project titled The Legend of California, an open-world action-survival shooter set during the gold rush era in California.
In related news, Overwatch has been announced for the upcoming Switch 2, slated for release later this year, marking another chapter in the franchise’s evolving narrative.
