Title: Fan Initiative Revives Cancelled ‘Star Wars: First Assault’ Game Amid Legal Uncertainty

In a move reminiscent of bygone days, the fan community has resurrected the long-canceled game “Star Wars: First Assault,” a project that was initially part of Disney’s acquisition of George Lucas’ empire over a decade ago. This takeover led to significant changes within LucasArts and resulted in the discontinuation of several promising titles, including “First Assault.” Although LucasArts has since been rebranded as Lucasfilm Games in 2021, the revival of this title highlights the ongoing passion for the franchise among fans.

As reported by TheSixthAxis, a dedicated community initiative is currently working to complete the game using pre-release code that had leaked years ago. Despite the potential legal repercussions from Disney and Lucasfilm Games—who may move swiftly to shut down the project—the initiative has garnered attention, particularly through an extensive YouTube livestream showcasing over an hour of unedited gameplay featuring iconic battles between Stormtroopers and Rebels.

The original stream, under the name Unseen Halo – Corbin, occurs within the familiar Tatooine environment, demonstrating the game’s mechanics and combat dynamics. “Star Wars: First Assault” was envisioned as the franchise’s answer to first-person shooters like “Call of Duty.” While EA’s subsequent “Battlefront” titles found commercial success, many fans speculate that a more competitive online shooter could also have thrived in the current gaming landscape.

Although the current build exhibits performance issues—such as low framerates, visual glitches, and awkward animations—the game is functional, especially in its online mode, making it a noteworthy piece of gaming history. In a statement from 2024, former LucasArts developer Patrick Wren indicated that “First Assault” was only “months away” from completion when it was canceled, adding that no additional development costs would have been required at that stage.

Currently, the fan-driven community is welcoming new players through its Discord server, though it seems inevitable that Disney’s legal teams may intervene soon, akin to the Empire’s swift response to rebellion on Hoth. This project, reminiscent of other fan-led efforts like the revival of Free Radical’s cancelled “Star Wars Battlefront 3,” underscores the enduring enthusiasm of “Star Wars” fans, who continue to defy the odds in their quest to revive lost gaming treasures.
