72-Year-Old Tânia Maria Shines in Oscar-Nominated Film
At the age of 72, Tânia Maria has made a remarkable entry into the film industry as part of an Oscar-nominated production. Her latest project, The Secret Agent, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and featuring Wagner Moura, has received nominations for Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, and Best Casting at the 2026 Academy Awards. “Now I understand what the Oscars are. I want to experience it,” she said with a laugh. However, when asked about attending the ceremony, she expressed regret. “Many people have been inquiring if I’ll be there. The answer is no! Brazil needs its stars shining here too.”
Before her acting career began, Tânia had never stepped foot inside a movie theater. Living a quiet life in the small village of Santo Antônio da Cobra—home to fewer than a thousand residents—she was unfamiliar with the allure of celebrity. Her journey into the spotlight began when Mendonça Filho sought extras for his film Bacurau in 2019. A simple “good evening” was enough to secure her a role, thanks to casting producer Renata Roberta. The director even guided her through her performances, culminating in a memorable line that became iconic: “What kind of outfit is that, boy?” delivered to Silvero Pereira’s character, Lunga.
In The Secret Agent, Tânia portrays Dona Sebastiana, a woman clad in a striking floral dress who provides sanctuary for those persecuted during Brazil’s military dictatorship. Her portrayal has resonated deeply with audiences, leading to fans replicating her costume during Carnival. “It’s incredibly gratifying to see people want to emulate me; it means they appreciated my performance,” she reflected, honored yet unfazed by the attention.
Tânia also spoke highly of her time working with Wagner Moura, stating, “Upon arrival for filming, he would come right over to embrace me. He truly took great care of me.”
Now at age 79, Tânia emphasizes that her captivating performances are simply true reflections of herself. “I am those characters,” she stated. Her next film, Yellow Cake, directed by Tiago Melo, recently premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival as the sole Brazilian entry in the Tiger Competition. This sci-fi narrative intertwines folk culture with social critique, set against the backdrop of rare mineral mining in the Brazilian sertão.
The International Cinephile Society has already hailed her as “the breakout star” of The Secret Agent, in yet another captivating role. Tânia plays Dona Rita, and she insists that much of her own essence is infused in the character, though she remains coy about further details, stating, “I’m not going to reveal more so as not to spoil its charm.”
With six additional films slated for release in 2026, Tânia Maria remainsopen to new opportunities. When asked about the type of roles she seeks, she replied, “Whatever comes my way, I’m ready for it.” She also shared her thoughts on being an inspiration for those who feel they may have missed their calling: “Age is merely a number. I still feel young.”
The Secret Agent is nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best International Feature Film and Best Motion Picture of the Year. Furthermore, Wagner Moura has received a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role, which could make him the first Brazilian man to claim an Oscar in this category if he wins.
