Kate Winslet Returns to New Zealand for Role in Upcoming ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Film
At the age of 17, Kate Winslet made her feature film debut in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, a poignant portrayal set against the backdrop of New Zealand. Now, over 30 years later, Winslet is once again heading to the land of the long white cloud, this time to join the cast of Andy Serkis’ highly anticipated The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. This new project comes on the heels of her role as Na’vi Ronal in James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash.
According to Deadline, the Oscar-winning actress will assume the female lead in the film, which is set to begin its five-month production cycle in New Zealand from May to October. Insider reports from Deadline’s “Breaking Baz” segment reveal that director Andy Serkis and producer Peter Jackson dedicated much of last year to convincing Winslet to relocate for the project. Her recent remarks during the promotional tour for Goodbye June hinted at her extended absence from the UK, further fueling speculation about her involvement in this new endeavor.
Winslet’s casting alongside veteran actors such as Sir Ian McKellen, who reprises his role as Gandalf, and Elijah Wood, returning as Frodo Baggins, marks an exciting reunion for fans of the franchise. Meanwhile, there are whispers of potential cast additions, including Leo Woodall as Aragorn and Anya Taylor-Joy in an undisclosed role, although these claims lack confirmation from major Hollywood sources or the actors themselves.
Set between the narratives of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, The Hunt for Gollum is described by co-writer Philippa Boyens as “an adventure story with a really strong psychological, interior story.” The plot centers on Aragorn’s mission to capture Gollum before the creature reveals the location of The One Ring to Sauron.
While the specifics of Winslet’s character remain under wraps, details are expected to emerge as the filming progresses. Audiences can anticipate returning to Middle-earth when The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum premieres in cinemas on December 17, 2027.
