Lola Young Discusses Recovery Journey Following On-Stage Collapse
Lola Young, a prominent figure in the UK music scene, has candidly shared her struggles with addiction following a troubling incident during a live performance. The London-born artist revealed that she has been actively participating in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings after collapsing on stage at the All Things Go festival in New York last September.
Young’s rise to fame accelerated in late 2024 when her track “Messy” gained viral popularity on TikTok. Throughout her career, she has grappled with personal challenges, including a five-week stint in rehabilitation for cocaine addiction. Reports indicated that she had relapsed the following summer while managing a busy festival schedule.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Young recounted the events leading to her dramatic collapse, which occurred shortly after the release of her third album. Following this incident, she made the difficult decision to cancel her upcoming tour dates. “It was a decision I had to make… What else was I going to do, die? That was the reality of where my addiction was heading,” she stated, reflecting on her journey.
After her on-stage incident, Young checked into a holistic treatment facility for two months. She emphasized the importance of this decision, noting that it has allowed her to better herself for her fans and for her own well-being.
The singer, who has previously spoken about living with schizoaffective disorder and ADHD, expressed a sense of gratitude for the challenges she faced. “It was, what do you call that? A breaking point which allowed me to be here today, better for my fans and better for myself,” she added.
Addiction has been a recurring theme in Young’s music, with tracks like “D3aler” and “Not Like That Anymore” addressing her struggles. “I’m just writing what I’m feeling, and then I’ll realize later, ‘Oh, I shouldn’t have said that I’m a raging drug addict,’” she expressed, embracing her truth and vulnerability.
Following her hiatus, Young made a triumphant return to the stage at the Grammy Awards in February, delivering a performance of “Messy” and winning the award for Best Pop Solo Performance. A recent headline show at the London Palladium marked another milestone in her recovery journey, alongside her appearance at Paris Fashion Week.
