Early Reviews of Apple’s New MacBook Pro Models Highlight Performance Improvements

The tech world awaits the launch of Apple’s latest MacBook Pro models, featuring the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, scheduled for release this Wednesday. Initial reviews from select media outlets and YouTube channels have begun to surface, providing insights into the capabilities of the new 14-inch and 16-inch laptops.

These models are not only equipped with the powerful M5 Pro and M5 Max chips but also boast enhancements such as SSD speeds that are reportedly up to two times faster than their predecessors. The base storage has been increased to 1TB, and all new models exhibit a slight boost in battery life. Additionally, the integration of Apple’s N1 chip brings support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

Ahead of these reviews, Geekbench 6 benchmark results indicated that the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips offer approximately 15% faster CPU performance and up to 20% improved GPU performance when compared to the previous M4 Pro and M4 Max variants.

In terms of benchmark scores, the new MacBook Pro models show compelling results:

    Mac Model Multi-Core CPU Score
MacBook Pro (M5 Pro and M5 Max) 28,500 to 29,500
    Mac Studio (M3 Ultra) 27,726
    MacBook Pro (M4 Max) 25,702
    MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) 22,490
    Mac Studio (M2 Ultra) 21,410
    MacBook Pro (M3 Max) 20,960
    Mac Studio (M1 Ultra) 18,434
    MacBook Air (M5) 17,073
    MacBook Pro (M3 Pro) 15,260
    MacBook Pro (M2 Max) 14,740
    MacBook Air (M4) 14,731
    MacBook Pro (M2 Pro) 14,451
    MacBook Pro (M1 Max) 12,345
    MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) 12,345
    MacBook Air (M3) 12,020
    MacBook Air (M2) 9,709
    MacBook Neo (A18 Pro) 8,668
    MacBook Air (M1) 8,342

The Verge reported that the 16-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the M5 Max and a 4TB SSD achieved impressive read and write speeds of 13.6 GB/s and 17.8 GB/s, representing increases of 86% and 123%, respectively, compared to the previous model. This aligns with Apple’s claims of significantly enhanced SSD performance.

Tom’s Guide’s Tony Polanco highlighted the remarkable battery life of the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro, which lasted 21 hours and 10 minutes during a continuous web browsing test at a screen brightness of 150 nits. This surpasses the previous M4 Pro’s performance of 20 hours and 46 minutes.

Additional reviews from prominent tech outlets such as CNET, Gizmodo, Macworld, and Six Colors have also contributed to the growing conversation surrounding these new devices.

Looking ahead, rumors suggest that a significant redesign of the MacBook Pro line could be on the horizon, potentially arriving in late 2026 or 2027. Expected features include an OLED display, touchscreen functionality, and advanced M6 Pro and M6 Max chips fabricated using TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm technology. There are also whispers of a new high-end model, potentially dubbed the “MacBook Ultra,” which could incorporate a thinner design and built-in cellular connectivity.

As anticipation builds for the official launch, the new MacBook Pro models appear poised to set a high standard in the tech industry.
