Initial Tests of Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max CPUs: A Mixed Bag
Preliminary assessments of Apple’s latest M5 Pro and M5 Max CPUs yield varied results. Notably, Apple’s choice to equip both models with identical CPUs is advantageous for M5 Pro users, who can expect a significant performance boost while enjoying the same processing power as the more advanced M5 Max.
However, prospective buyers of the M5 Max may find the enhancements less compelling, as the new M5 Max CPU does not offer a substantial speed improvement over its predecessor. While single-core performance has indeed improved, it appears that this level of performance is also achievable with the MacBook Air, priced at $1,099.
In a competitive landscape, Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon X2 Elite series may pose a challenge to Apple’s dominance in CPU performance, based on initial reference scores. Further reviews and hands-on tests will be necessary to confirm these findings and to analyze performance more thoroughly.
We plan to update this article shortly with additional benchmark results. We welcome comments and suggestions for specific benchmarks you would like us to explore.
