Jello Biafra Hospitalized Following Hemorrhagic Stroke
Jello Biafra, the iconic lead singer of the punk rock band Dead Kennedys, has been hospitalized after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke linked to elevated blood pressure on Saturday, March 7. The 67-year-old musician announced the medical emergency via an Instagram post through his record label, Alternative Tentacles.
In his candid account, Biafra described the moment he realized he was experiencing a stroke. “I hopped out of my bed because I needed to pee, and my left leg just collapsed under me. I fell to the floor and couldn’t even break the fall with my left arm because it wasn’t functioning. I tried to get back up, but I couldn’t. It dawned on me, ‘Oh shit, I’m having a stroke!’” He expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, “I still have a lot of great stuff in me, but right now, I’ve got a lot of rehabbing to do.”
Currently, Biafra is reported to be in stable condition in the hospital, with Alternative Tentacles promising to keep fans posted on his progress.
Biafra’s career in music began with the founding of Dead Kennedys in 1978. He served as the band’s co-founder and frontman until their split in 1986, leaving a lasting mark on the punk rock genre. Beyond his work with Dead Kennedys, he has explored various musical avenues, including electropunk with the Witch Trials and collaboration with Ministry members in the band Lard, as well as partnerships with notable acts like D.O.A. and Nomeansno. His most recent album, Tea Party Revenge Porn, released in 2020, showcased his continued artistic evolution.
Since Dead Kennedys’ reformation in 2001, Biafra has opted not to rejoin the band for their ongoing performances. This decision follows a contentious legal dispute in 1998, where Biafra was accused of withholding royalties. The lawsuit resulted in a settlement that required him to compensate his former bandmates and relinquish rights to much of the band’s back catalog, enabling them to reissue earlier albums, including their debut, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, in 2022. Notably, that year also saw the passing of D.H. Peligro, the band’s longtime drummer.
