As Brenda Blethyn approaches her 80th birthday this February, the acclaimed British actress remains undeterred by age, expressing, “I don’t feel 80. When you’re young and think of 80, you envision someone in a bath chair. Thankfully, that’s not my reality.” The star of ITV’s Vera sees this milestone not as a limit but as an opportunity for new challenges and adventures.
Having stepped away from her iconic role after 14 successful years, Blethyn is busier than ever. The BAFTA and Golden Globe winner continues to thrive professionally while eyeing an ambitious personal goal: completing a half-marathon. Blethyn, who has previously participated in the London Marathon three times, acknowledged the challenge, saying, “I’ll see what the trainer says,” regarding her readiness to tackle another long-distance run.
Running a half-marathon at 80 might seem daunting to some, but Blethyn has a history of defying the odds. She famously completed her first full marathon just shy of 60, an accomplishment she recounts with a sense of pride. “Sometimes I didn’t feel like doing it,” she admits, “and if I didn’t answer the door, he’d shout through the letterbox, ‘I know you’re in there’,” referring to her motivational trainer.
Her husband, Michael Mayhew, whom she has been with for over five decades, has an amusing approach to her running routine. He would drop her off at various locations across London, prompting her to make the journey back home on foot.
While they maintain separate residences, a living arrangement Blethyn describes as working “brilliantly,” it is clear that their partnership remains a solid foundation for her life and career.
In addition to her physical endeavors, Blethyn’s professional life continues to flourish. After stepping away from Vera, she was pleasantly surprised by the influx of opportunities, stating, “I didn’t think the phone would ever ring, but it’s been ringing off the hook.”
Blethyn’s latest projects include a role in the upcoming film Dragonfly, and she is set to star in Channel 4’s new drama A Woman of Substance, which is based on Barbara Taylor Bradford’s best-selling novel. In this series, Blethyn portrays the older version of Emma Harte, a maid who rises to become a formidable businesswoman.
Despite the shift from gritty characters in films like Secrets & Lies, Blethyn remains humble about her casting in such a prestigious role. “If you were casting A Woman of Substance, who would be the first person that springs to mind? Brenda Blethyn?” she queries, acknowledging the contrast to her previous roles.
Yet, the themes of hard work and class struggle in the narrative resonate deeply with her. “I understood Emma’s struggle and the importance of earning just a couple more shillings. My mum had three jobs to make ends meet,” she reflects on her own upbringing, stressing the lessons of perseverance that have shaped her journey. “You’re taught that if you want anything, you’ve got to work for it. Nothing will be handed to you, especially if you’re working-class.”
