Sonos CEO Discusses Abandonment of Streaming Device Project
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Tom Conrad, the CEO of Sonos, shed light on the company’s decision to shelve an ambitious streaming device project codenamed “Pinewood.” Initially envisioned as a competitor to established players like Apple TV and Google Chromecast, the device’s production was halted due to staffing challenges and a strategic shift within the company.
Conrad elaborated on the troubled backdrop, citing a rocky period marked by a failed app rollout that led to widespread issues with the company’s existing products. The Pinewood project had reportedly been slated for release in mid-2025, with anticipated prices ranging between $200 and $400. Despite its promising features, staffing limitations ultimately led Conrad to decide against proceeding with the development.
Upon assuming his role as CEO, Conrad recognized the need to ‘reset expectations’ within Sonos. He emphasized that the goal was to “execute it well,” which meant abandoning the Pinewood project in favor of more achievable initiatives.
This strategic pivot appears to be yielding positive results, as Sonos recently introduced a new portable speaker priced at $300. While not a streaming device, the new offering aligns well with the company’s evolving portfolio as it seeks to regain stability and strengthen its market position.
