Epic Games Announces Price Increase for Fortnite’s V-Bucks
Fortnite’s scenic landscapes may seem less inviting to players as Epic Games recently announced a significant price hike for V-Bucks, the game’s premium currency. This change, set to take effect on March 19, comes just days after the company shared its decision through a brief blog post on March 10.
The new pricing structure indicates that players will receive fewer V-Bucks for their purchases. Epic Games, which reportedly generated $6.21 billion in gross revenue last year, cited the need to cover operational costs as the driving force behind this adjustment. The revised V-Buck allocations for each pack are as follows, though local prices may vary:
- $8.99 pack – 800 V-Bucks (previously 1,000)
- $22.99 pack – 2,400 V-Bucks (previously 2,800)
- $36.99 pack – 4,500 V-Bucks (previously 5,000)
- $89.99 pack – 12,500 V-Bucks (previously 13,500)
- Exact amount pack – $0.99 for 50 V-Bucks (previously $0.49 for 50)
In an attempt to mitigate player dissatisfaction, Epic Games will offer a 20% cashback on purchases made through the Epic Games Store, applicable to transactions involving Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys.
Additionally, changes are being made to the pricing of battle passes, which are now listed at 800 V-Bucks, a decrease from the previous price of 1,000 V-Bucks. While this may seem like a price reduction, players should note that only 800 V-Bucks will be awarded upon completion of the pass, resulting in an overall diminished value. Other passes are also experiencing adjustments, including:
- OG Pass – 800 V-Bucks (previously 1,000)
- Music Pass – 1,200 V-Bucks (previously 1,400)
- Lego Pass – 1,200 V-Bucks (previously 1,400)
It is important to note that physical V-Bucks gift cards currently available for purchase will still redeem for their original values; the new pricing will apply only to future cards as they are printed and distributed.
While the ongoing development, server maintenance, and extensive intellectual property licensing associated with Fortnite undoubtedly come at a high cost, the game’s popularity continues to thrive. Nevertheless, concerns have been raised about the sustainability of Epic’s strategies, particularly as the Epic Games Store grapples with reportedly low profit margins despite the company’s efforts. This raises questions regarding the long-term viability of Fortnite’s expansive presence and the effectiveness of current investment strategies in the gaming industry.
