Microsoft Unveils Sneak Peek of Project Helix: A Look at the Next-Gen Xbox and PC Hybrid Console
Microsoft has shared a glimpse of its latest hardware in development, following the announcement last week of Project Helix, the company’s forthcoming hybrid console for PC and Xbox.
This morning, the Microsoft Game Dev account posted a series of three black-and-white images on social media. The photos feature a console shell marked with “XDK,” which stands for Xbox Developer Kit—a typical designation for early development hardware that offers technical performance close to that of the final product.
Upon closer inspection, the design of the console shell bears a striking resemblance to previous Xbox developer kits, particularly the XDK for Project Scorpio, which eventually became known as the Xbox One X. The images even show the console shell accumulating dust, suggesting it might have been in storage since the Scorpio development days.
In a tweet showcasing the images, Microsoft stated, “Xbox at GDC 🔥 Sneak peek #GDC2026,” hinting at the timing of the reveal ahead of this week’s Game Developer Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, where Microsoft’s new gaming division head, Asha Sharma, is engaging with developers regarding the company’s next-gen strategies.
While the intent of the post appears geared toward generating excitement for Project Helix, fans have expressed confusion over the apparent reuse of an existing XDK shell. It’s feasible that Microsoft may have repurposed the casing from the Scorpio XDK to house the updated components for the new hybrid console.
The decision to utilize a familiar design raises questions, as historically, Microsoft has not reused hardware shells across multiple generations. In a 2017 showcase of the Scorpio dev kit, the company juxtaposed the newer console with earlier developer kits from previous Xbox generations, emphasizing innovation with each iteration.
Requests for further clarification from Microsoft regarding the images are currently pending. Nevertheless, this development signals that Xbox is actively progressing toward its next-generation console amid shifts in leadership, following the recent departures of former gaming CEO Phil Spencer and Xbox president Sarah Bond.
