Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment Collaborate on Quentin Tarantino’s Upcoming Play
Sonia Friedman Productions, in conjunction with Sony Pictures Entertainment, has announced their collaboration on a new stage production titled The Popinjay Cavalier, penned by acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.
Described as a “swashbuckling comedy,” the play promises an engaging blend of humor and adventure. Set against the backdrop of 1830s Europe, The Popinjay Cavalier is characterized as a lively tale of trickery and transformation, harking back to the grand epics of theatrics and cinema. The production aims to celebrate the art of theatre, incorporating Tarantino’s distinctive style and sharp wit.
Scheduled to premiere in London’s West End in early 2027, the anticipation surrounding the production is already building.
Sonia Friedman Productions is known for its track record of successful stage adaptations, including Paddington: The Musical and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This latest venture marks an exciting expansion of the company’s diverse portfolio.
Last summer, Tarantino revealed that he was working on this play, stating, “The play is written. It is absolutely the next thing I’m going to do. We’ll start the ball rolling on it in January… It’s probably going to take up a year and a half to two years of my life.” Recent reports indicate that preparations for the production may begin as early as January 2027.
In addition to his theatrical endeavors, Tarantino’s next film project is anticipated to be The Adventures of Cliff Booth, scripted by David Fincher. There is speculation that this film could potentially premiere at the Venice Film Festival, a notable venue where Fincher previously unveiled The Killer three years ago.
