Apple Expands Product Line with Budget MacBook and Plans for High-End “Ultra” Series
Last week, Apple unveiled its most affordable laptop to date: the $599 MacBook Neo, which is offered at a reduced price of $499 for students utilizing Apple’s education discount. This move is part of Apple’s strategy to attract a broader range of consumers while also developing products in the premium market segment.
According to a recent report from Bloomberg technology journalist Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly considering a new product line tentatively named “Ultra.” This label aligns with the company’s existing high-end offerings—including the Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra, and its premium Ultra chipsets.
Within this proposed “Ultra” series, Gurman identifies several upcoming products, notably the iPhone Fold, the next-generation AirPods, and a touchscreen MacBook. While he notes that the “Ultra” branding is not yet official, it signals Apple’s intention to create high-end devices that sit above the current premium models, such as the iPhone Pro and MacBook Pro.
These anticipated products are expected to come with a significant price tag. For instance, the iPhone Fold is projected to launch at a starting price around $2,000, positioning it firmly in the luxury smartphone category.
The next generation of AirPods may incorporate “computer-vision cameras,” allowing Siri to utilize visual data to enhance its AI capabilities. If branded as “Ultra,” these AirPods would offer a more advanced experience compared to the current AirPods Pro.
Additionally, the company is exploring the introduction of a standalone touchscreen MacBook, distinct from the existing MacBook Pro range. Gurman suggests that whether this new device carries the “Ultra” moniker or a different name, it is likely to coexist alongside the MacBook Pro line rather than serve as a replacement. The touchscreen MacBook is anticipated to be even pricier than the newly launched MacBook Pro models featuring the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, the latter starting at $3,599.
Inside Apple, discussions are ongoing regarding the potential production of a foldable iPad and a high-end “Ultra” variant of the iMac. This aligns with CEO Tim Cook’s strategy of offering various price points across established product lines to capture a wider audience—evidenced by the recent introduction of the MacBook Neo.
As Apple ventures further into both budget-friendly and premium markets, the tech giant appears poised to offer products that cater to diverse consumer preferences while solidifying its presence at multiple pricing tiers.
